Dishonored Trailer Analysis: Here's What You Missed

#0:20

The trailer opens up with Corvo rotting inside a prison cell in Dunwall. "When you are near my heart is at peace. Hurry home," says a woman's voice. It's followed by the voice of a lawyer who says he's killed the empress.

#0:40

He's jarred from his thoughts by the approach of a mysterious figure who explains how he's been framed for the death of the empress.

#1:00

The mysterious figure brands Corvo with a mark on the back of his left hand and presumably frees him from the prison cell.

#1:22

The scene cuts away to the city of Dunwall, which looks a lot like London in the early 1900s. Power lines run across the city, feeding electricity to the electrical lamps on every street. A ship of some sort moves through the canal in the middle of the city.

#1:35

As the camera pans to the sight of corpses piled up by the side of the canal, a loudspeaker blares an alert to members of the City Watch to be on guard for suspicious persons. Another warning is issued to state that "contaminated" buildings are off-limits. A mechanized walker strides across the screen. It's not the last we've seen of these machines.

#1:48

As a mechanical carriage moves through the street on rails, a guard on an overwatch tower looks down at milling citizens on the street below. He issues an order to the watchman beside him to clear them out. The watchman is hooked into the mechanized walker we saw earlier.

#2:00 / 2:02

Armed with a composite bow, the watchman in the walker takes aim at the citizens and lets loose an inferno that burns them in the conflagration.

#2:05

One of the panicked citizens runs in-between a pair of tesla coils located by the rails and explodes into a pile of smoldering meat.

#2:12

The passenger of the mechanical carriage is revealed as a nobleman of some sort, and he sniffs his disdain at the dead civilians and continues on his journey through the city.

#2:17

Corvo watches the carriage from the rooftops.

#2:19

Corvo takes a quick look at his mask and wears it. It has a mechanical interior. Putting it on, his vision shifts red and back to normal

#2:31

Like Ezio Auditore, Corvo leaps across the rooftops, in pursuit of the carriage, and heads to its destination.

#2:41

Armed guards patrol the building's exterior.

#2:54

Corvo makes his entry by stabbing a guard from above and makes his way into the building.

#3:11

Our protagonist peers through a keyhole and spies the man in the carriage and a guard speaking to each other. The nobleman in the carriage says that he sees no reason to be concerned about the disease ravaging the city as long as it confines itself to the poor.

#3:17

Corvo's hand lights up when he uses a power to destroy the door. He makes short work of the guard with his dagger and pursues the nobleman.

#3:30

As he breaks into another room, three guards take aim at Corvo with their guns and open fire. He uses an ability to freeze time and another ability to turn their bullets back at them. This kills the guards.

#3:45

As more guards burst into the room, Corvo uses another power to dash forwards, and propels himself out through the glass window and onto the street below.

#3:57

Barely regaining his balance, he's ambushed by two mechanized walkers.

#4:00

Here, we can finally get a good view of what Corvo looks like. He holds up his glowing hand and the trailer ends with the words "revenge solves everything."

Dishonored [Avance][upperpad]

1
Corvo was probably getting it on with the Empress

Corvo Atano was the former bodyguard of the Empress, Jessamine Caldwin, and is accused of killing her. That’s the crime he’s in prison for at the start of the trailer. Among snippets of his trial and threats of an imminent beheading we hear a female voice, presumably the Empress, saying, “When you are near my heart is at peace. Hurry home”. It implies the two might have had more than a simple working relationship. Jessamine also has a daughter called Emily. Bet you anything Corv’s the dad.

2
Corvo’s being played

This shadowy figure is The Outsider, a supernatural entity worshiped by some like a god. He’s described as ambiguous and “part devil, part angel”. He rarely physically appears and only contacts people he believes are important to fate. So while he looks like he’s helping Corvo, he’s probably using him to achieve some other, larger goal.

3
You don’t start magical

When the Outsider visits Corvo in prison he gives him ‘his mark’ and says “consider it a gift”. The Outsider is the source of all magical and supernatural abilities in Dishonored’s world (The Isles). This brand is seen lighting up as Corvo uses it to blow apart a door (possibly using a spell called Windblast), freeze time and ‘Blink’, a short distance teleport. Other powers so far revealed are the ability to move faster, summon a swarm of rats, fall from a height without getting hurt, a fire, ice and healing spell and the power to possess people and animals.

4
The world is in a bad way

Dunwall, the main setting for Dishonored, is besieged by the Rat Plague. It’s nasty disease that’s killed half the population via bleeding from the eyes, hair loss and emaciation. The disease is fatal but slow to kill with the infected called Weepers because of their bloody tears. It’s left the city in chaos with curfews, martial law and lethally enforced quarantines. Basically the whole world has gone to hell in a hand basket and the rich are sitting pretty in their big houses while the poor rot. It’s probably not going to end well.

5
Life is cheap

At one point in the trailer a group of Weepers are cleared out the way of an oncoming aristocrat. And by cleared I mean incinerated with an exploding arrow fired from a Tall Boy, a set of bionic legs used by guards to get around and avoid the rats. Then there’s the Wall Of Light above. These quarantine areas by vaporising Weepers, people, rats – anyone or thing who isn’t a guard – if they try to pass through. Corvo can at least get past them by removing the battery, cutting the power line or reversing the polarity so it fries guards instead and lets him though.

6
There’s technology as well as magic

Corvo has a mask which acts as both a filter to protect him from the plague and provides alternate vison modes. His guns can fire exploding bullets and more while his sword is collapsable: folding down for easy concealment. He also has something called the Heart, which beats faster when he’s near objectives. It can also read people’s minds and reveal secrets in the world. Gadgets and other tech are powered by Trans, oil harvested from whales that’s turned into batteries.

7
There’s a magic Mirror’s Edge vibe going on

The trailer shows Corvo sprinting across the roof tops in pursuit of a target. There have been a range of movements talked about in the game including the ability to slide, mantle ledges, lean, sneak, sprint and jump. All of which suggest you’ll be pinging about all over the place. However, you can also combine these skills with magic – jumping off a roof then teleporting, for example. Or possessing a guard and using their pointless body to take the brunt of a long fall.

8
The Tall Boys have a weak spot

Of course they do. That big glowing tube on their back is most likely a Trans battery powering the Tall Boy rig. Such batteries are volatile so a few good hits with the weapon of your choice will probably be enough to blow the whole arrangement up. The Tall Boys apparently have quite a slow turning circle as well, so getting behind them will be the main tactic if you go up against one.

9
The guards are smart

One of your tools is the ability to peer through keyholes to spy on people in other rooms. The guard’s reaction here suggests you can be spotted, adding a risk reward element to the stealth gameplay. Chances are they’ll also have some sort of ability to detect if you’ve possessed another guard. So you won’t be able to just hop into a body and walk around unchallenged. Stealth is important because a Chaos system changes the world according to how you play. If you go crazy and raise hell then the world becomes more aggressive and uncontrollable. Play it safe instead and everyone stays calm.

10
The weapons are going to be so cool

The trailer only shows off this weird whirly crossbow deely but it looks brilliant as it rotates to dispense hot bolt justice into the throats of these time-frozen guards. Corvo also has a flintlock pistol which can fire different ammo types. So far only the ‘exploding’ variety has been revealed. That’s a bullet containing a small amount of Trans to create a blast on impact. Other weapons include Spring Razors, mines that explode into looping, slicing lengths of wire when triggered.

Dishonored will have different endings; players will be able to either kill or spare their victims

Dishonored is one of our most anticipated titles of 2012. The game is under the direction of co-creative directors, Raphael Colantonio, lead designer on Arx Fatalis, and Harvey Smith, lead designer on Deus Ex and looks quite promising. Players will take the role of a supernatural assassin, Corvo, that is framed for the murder of the city’s Empress and according to the developers, their actions – through out the game – will have a huge impact on the game’s ending.

That was revealed in a new interview of Arkane’s Raf Colantonio and Harvey Smith with GameInformer. According to the two creative directors for Dishonored, your actions will affect many things on the game, as well as the outcome of it.

In true Deus Ex style, players will be able to complete levels without anyone knowing that they were there or cause as much chaos as they want to. Harvey Smith said that although Dishonored is mainly a stealth game, it supports any kind of approach. So yeah, you can play it in the same with other FPS titles.

As we said, Corvo is framed for the murder of the city’s Empress. Your ultimate goal in Dishonored is to take revenge for being framed, however you can spare your victims. Naturally, these decisions will result in different endings and there will be consequences for killing innocent people. Kill a lot of people and potential allies can turn against you. It’s a pretty interesting concept and something that has not been done before, so we are really looking forward to it.

The game will also feature a homebase where you can go back after the completion of a mission. The NPCs’ behavior in your homebase will also reflect your actions during the missions that occurred.

What’s really interesting here is that Dishonored will not feature a ‘bad’ ending and a ‘good’ ending, like most other video games. Arkane Studios is not interested in such concept where players can get a good ending by saving everyone or a bad one by killing everyone. Both Harvey and Raf promised to include a lot of variations for their endings that will depend on your actions and not on a simple choice at the end of the game.

You can view the entire interview with GameInformer below. Enjoy and stay tuned for more!

Dishonored PS3 video interview: Harvey Smith & Raphael Colantonio[Interview][officialplaystationmagazine]

Arkane “open” to Dishonored sequels, “other things”

Dishonored co-creative director Raf Colantonio has told VG247 that developer Arkane is definitely “open” to the idea of making sequels and more within the IP.

“The world is bigger than the game,” Colantonio said at an eyes-on event for the game last week in London.

“Right now, we’re focussed entirely on the game, we’re not thinking of anything else. But it’s definitely an open universe. We’d be open to sequels and other things.”

His fellow co-creative director Harvey Smith added the creation of the new IP – Arkane’s first since it was snapped up by Bethesda parent ZeniMax two years ago – was “ambitious”, but said its enjoyed how making it has been turning out.

“This was an ambitious project for us and we’re super thrilled with the way its turning out. We’re playing the game all the time and we’re just thrilled to have been part of it,” said Smith.

“And it’s not just the game mechanics, it’s the world itself. We really like the world it takes place in. It’s a difficult game to do because I think a lot of games are like a linear path with a trail of breadcrumbs left by the designer, but as soon as you as support multiple playstyles, multiple paths and multiple outcomes, it gets harder to develop

“And on top of that when you’re making a new IP and you really don’t know what’s going on in the world like, ‘what’s their religion again, how do they get around, whats their industry, what are their coins called?’ You know, every other detail.”

Smith continued: “Dishonored is very different and it’s a very cohesive world. You play through and you get a sense you’re only touching 10% of what exists or something just because we elude to things that are outside the game in a cohesive way. So its been fun and its been the creation of an ambitious game and the creation of a new IP and those things are challenging.”

Colantonio and Smith were talking to Sam Clay as part of an unaired segment from our video interview with the duo at the London event last week. Get the rest of it and new screens here.

Dishonored releases later this year for PS3, 360 and PC.

Bethesda Kicks Off Mysterious Dishonored Promotion With Puzzle Clock, Wanted Poster

Bethesda have already started to market and tease their upcoming game Dishonored and, as anybody would expect from a company like Bethesda, we’re talking about high quality promotion here.

Therefore, we found out that the publisher sent to some big game sites (G4 and Eurogamer) out there a bunch of mysterious items: a Dishonored Wanted poster (you can see it below) offering a reward of 10,000 coins for those who can offer details about Corvo Atano, as well as an even more mysterious clock! Now check out the cool poster:

As you can see, the poster also shows an ad to RevengeSolvesEverything.com, a site we’ve already revealed before this promotion started. Hopefully now more content will be added to it.

But there’s also a clock, a Dishonored clock that Bethesda sent out and it is a puzzle most likely, one that still has to be solved. Check out the full video below:

Maybe this clock is a reference to the “Watch”? Maybe a countdown timer will start soon? Nobody knows yet, but it certainly is really interesting.
